Programme specification:
The programme acknowledges the increasing cross-over between the visual culture of art and design, their modes of creation, manufacture and distribution and the critical context in which they are viewed and evaluated. BA Art and Design focuses on the practice of contemporary art in a design context with supporting theoretical, historical and contextual studies. It provides a range of material disciplines and study routes which may be pursued in combination, or as individual specialisms. These include painting, sculpture, printmaking and digital media including video. The programme provides subject-specialist knowledge for those who wish to engage with the visual arts, its histories, traditions and modes of distribution.
In the first year, students work across subject specialisms, exploring processes and ideas appropriate to their studio work with complementary studies in the history and theory of art and design, the development of visual culture and the fundamentals of digital imaging. In Level Two, students focus their interests more closely on an area of studio practice and begin to produce a sustained body of work which engages with the socio-historical, cultural, political, aesthetic or other appropriate contexts of contemporary art. Complementary studies in colour and digital imaging, design theory and management and marketing continue. At the end of Level Three, students will be able to demonstrate detailed subject and contextual knowledge together with a high degree of professionalism in their studio practice. They will make a public presentation /exhibition of their work together with accompanying critical, textual or publicity material. A dissertation in the final year provides an opportunity to conduct a piece of in-depth research into a topic of their choice.
At each level students may choose to study subjects from a range optional modules from within the School or (at Levels 1 or 2) elective modules offered by other departments in the University. This allows students to tailor their academic study to their own interests and strengths, develop useful complementary skills such as languages, or gain knowledge that helps make them unique as graduates.
Between Levels 2 and 3 suitably qualified students may have the opportunity to extend their studies by taking a study year abroad at an appropriate European or International University, or opt to take a work placement in the cultural industries. Graduates may gain employment as practicing artists and designers, or work in the related cultural sector, the media or education. They may also progress to post-graduate study or research.
The programme is principally, but not exclusively, directed towards those who wish to pursue careers as practicing artists and designers. Graduates from the Art & Design programme have an impressive track record gaining exhibitions nationally and internationally and find jobs or work in the related cultural sector, the media or education. The programme's emphasis on gaining academic and transferable skills equips students to take advantage of a range of employment, enterprise and postgraduate opportunities.
