Programme specification:
The Foundation Degree (FD) in Learning and Teaching: Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) is a part-time programme for people working or volunteering in training, tutoring or support roles with learners in schools, specialist units, FE, HE, the voluntary sector, libraries and a variety of other contexts.
The programme runs for one afternoon per week and can be completed in three years. The course is aimed at those working with learners with SEND who wish to develop their understanding and expertise in this area and thereby enhance their career opportunities.
The FD combines the development of specialist knowledge through optional modules (for example on dyslexia) with core modules on how learners learn, typical and atypical development, developing teaching skills and broader issues in education. There is also an opportunity in Year 2 to experience a different SEND-related educational setting for a work-based learning module, enabling reflection on differences in professional structures and practice.
The course modules focus on linking theory and practice. Sessions promote discussion of individual professional experiences linked to the focus topic, and the majority of the assessments enable more in-depth analysis of practice.
Teaching on the FD programme is in relatively small groups, enabling students to actively engage in sessions, and benefit from a supportive context. Members of the Lifelong Learning Centre staff team are dedicated to helping students with all aspects of their progress to make the most of their time at the University.
