Programme specification:
The programme provides students with an intensive, multi-disciplinary learning experience (drawing on sociology, anthropology, psychology, media studies, education, history and human geography). The focus is on the new social studies of childhood and youth, and emphasis will be placed on developing a holistic understanding of childhood and youth. A central perspective is on children and young people as both 'beings and becomings' and as persons in their own right. Students will be encouraged to think of themselves as part of the emerging movement towards a multi-/ interdisciplinary field of study.
A range of compulsory and optional modules will allow students to construct their desired route through the course. Optional modules will give students the opportunity to develop theory and concepts in relation to specific topics and relate these to particular aspects of policy and professional practice. In addition students will complete a compulsory research methods module that specifically addresses the epistemological and ontological issues underpinning research with children and young people (rather than a generic research methods module that leaves students themselves to make the link to childhood research). The course has been developed by scholars internationally renowned as pioneers and key writers in the field.
