Programme specification:
The programme will help prepare students for the intellectual cutting edge that is emerging at the intersection of global
development and international political economy.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the ways in which globalisation shapes national strategies in all
countries and several existing UK MA programmes place an emphasis on this aspect, such as the MA Globalisation and
Development programmes at Warwick and Sussex. At the same time, there have been growing criticisms that field of
international political economy has paid too little attention to the insights from development studies. One of the most respected
IPE scholars in the field, Harvard's Robert Keohane, recently listed the need to become more aware of developments in the
global south and the need to pay greater attention to global actors as two of the greatest challenges facing IPE.
Since these weaknesses of IPE are strengths of Development Studies, an MA that combines international political economy
and global development studies would enable students to benefit from the complementary strengths of these two fields and
develop a unique perspective not just on global development, but the international political economy itself. Indeed, both past
IPE students who have taken development modules and development students who have take IPE modules have commented
favourably on how the two fields complement each other.
At the end of the programme students should:
- have demonstrated in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of techniques relevant to the discipline and/or to demonstrate
a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of the discipline;
- exhibited mastery in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities;
- demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research or advanced scholarship;
- taken a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
- proactively formulated ideas and hypotheses and developed, implemented and executed plans by which to evaluate these;
- critically and creatively evaluated current issues, research and advanced scholarship in Global Development and
International Political Economy;
- developed an understanding into the ways in which international political economy and global development studies are
complementary and contrasting fields.
Progression rules for all POLIS MA programmes
1) Proceed to dissertation:
Students can proceed straight to dissertation if a pass at 50% or above is achieved in a minimum of 90 credits (including all compulsory modules for that programme) AND if they have an overall credit weighted average of at least 50%. If there are any failed modules then one re-sit opportunity per failed module will be offered.
2) Proceed to dissertation suspended until 1) achieved:
Students who achieve 50% or above in a minimum of 60 but fewer than 90 credits will be suspended from progressing to dissertation until after their re-sits have been taken and the criteria in 1) have been achieved. Once the student has achieved the criteria in 1) they will be allowed to progress to project at the next available opportunity which is usually in the next academic year.
3) Cannot proceed to dissertation or MA, re-registered on PG Diploma:
Students will not be allowed to proceed to dissertation or the MA, and will subsequently be re-registered on the PGDip if a pass at 50% or above is achieved in fewer than 60 credits. There will be one re-sit opportunity offered for each failed module for a maximum award of a PGDiploma to be obtained.
