Programme specification:

The programme will:

- provide an environment for study that will encourage an enthusiasm for chemistry and an appreciation in depth of its application in a wide variety of contexts;
- provide students with a detailed appreciation of the discipline of chemistry, and the necessary background and intellectual training for a wide range of professional careers;
- develop a student's ability to apply his/her chemical knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems at the forefront of chemistry;
- provide the knowledge and experience which constitute an essential preliminary to performing original research with a degree of autonomy in chemistry or a related multidisciplinary field, either in industry, government research laboratories, or academic institutions;
- enable the students to aspire to the highest professional standards in chemistry;
- give a developed and balanced foundation of chemical knowledge, of scientific principles in a wider context, and encourage by experience the transferable skills that are of value in both chemical and non-chemical employment;
- provide students with an understanding of the principles, both theoretical and experimental, of organic, inorganic, physical, theoretical and analytical chemistry, and with the ability to apply them in innovative situations;
- provide an insight into selected areas of chemistry where major and important developments are currently taking place;
- develop an appreciation of the importance of chemistry in industrial, economic, environmental and social contexts;
- provide experience in carrying out a research project which includes a literature search, the planning and carrying out of experiments, and the processing and evaluation of results which are then presented in a variety of formats;
- enable students to enter the chemistry profession at a level beyond that of the corresponding BSc programme, and they will be able to plan and undertake a coherent and extended research project, either within a higher degree programme or within suitable industries;
- conform to professional standards in chemistry, and to satisfy the admission criteria for full Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) with Chartered Chemist status (CChem).

Candidates will be required to study the following compulsory modules:

Students will be required to pass CHEM1101 and CHEM1410 to progress to the second year.

Optional modules:

Students on all single honours chemistry programmes of study with Grade C or less in Mathematics A-level (or equivalent) will be required to study CHEM1181 Mathematics for Chemists (10 credits). Other students (with Grade B or higher in Mathematics A-level) will be required to study CHEM1281 Mathematical Tools for Chemists (5 credits).

Discovery modules:

Students will also study 20-30 credits of discovery modules (up to a total of 120 or 125 credits).

The School particularly recommends the following discovery modules: CHEM1200 The Extraordinary Chemistry of Everyday Life, CHEM1100 Science and Society: An ethical view, and CSER1022 Future Career planning for Chemists.

Students will be required to pass CHEM1101 and CHEM1410 to progress to the second year.

The award of Certificate of Higher Education requires obtaining 100 credits in Year 1 (or above), with a minimum of 80 credits of compulsory modules (including CHEM1101 and CHEM1410)
