Programme specification:

This Integrated Masters programme is a variant of the BA in Environment and Business, leading to the award of an Undergraduate Masters degree (MEnv).

Students on this four-year scheme enjoy the unique opportunity of spending their third year abroad, and take Masters-level modules on their return to Leeds.

Teaching on the programme draws on the skills and expertise of one of the largest groups of environmental and social scientists in the country whose research is tackling some of the major sustainability challenges we face. The international study abroad year, taken between levels 2 and 4, gives students the unique opportunity to learn from and interact with academics with different expertise and experience to those at Leeds, as well as gain experience of a different culture and learning context. Currently, teaching partnerships have been developed with Griffith University, Australia, Arizona State University, USA, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA.

The programme has been designed in line with the BA Environment and Business with a suite of core modules from the School of Earth and Environment and the Leeds University Business School. The modules begin by introducing environment and business concepts at level 1, investigate applications of tools and techniques in level 2, before tackling substantive business problems in more depth at level 5.

During their time at an overseas university, students are required to take a similar number of credits as would be taken by the average student at the university in each academic year, approximately 80% of which should be at a level appropriate to a student entering level 3 at Leeds University. The number of credits required to be taken at various levels is defined in a Learning Contract specific to each partner institution, as is the number of credits required to pass. Marks at the overseas institution are translated into a single Leeds mark according to a formula specific to each partner institution, and defined in the Learning Contract.

Students who undertake this programme will be precluded from studying MSc Sustainability and Business and the MSc Sustainability and Consultancy, as the extent of overlap between the MEnv and these two MSc programmes is extensive.

Students are allocated to partner universities during the first semester of second year. Allocation is made by the Study Abroad Office.

Progression Criteria : Unless extenuating circumstances determine otherwise, the following progression criteria will apply: (a) students are normally expected to maintain an average mark of 65 in their 1st year in order to remain on the programme; (b) students will also be expected to maintain an average mark of 60 in the first semester of their 2nd year in order to remain on the programme. If a student fails to maintain these requirements they will be transferred to the BA programme.

Transfer arrangements: Students transferring to the MEnv Environment and Business programme from the BA Environment and Business programme are expected to attain a minimum 60% average in year 1 and year 2, and transfer is conditional upon securing a study abroad place at one of the above partners. Dropping below 60% in second year with automatically lead to transfer onto a BA(International) programme.

Criteria for passing the 'Year Abroad': Marks at the overseas institution will be translated into a single Leeds mark (represented by module SOEE9001) according to a formula specific to each partner institution, and defined in the Learning Contract. To pass the year abroad the student will normally have to pass a minimum of 80% of higher level credits. If the student fails the year abroad by failing to gain a minimum of 80% of the required number of credits they will be transferred onto the equivalent BSc/BA programme and will take a 'normal' 3rd year at Leeds.
