Entry requirements:

An upper second class honours degree in Earth Science, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline. Lower qualifications may be considered on an ad hoc basis supported by relevant industrial experience. Mathematics to AS or A level (pass grade) or international equivalent is required, but this requirement can be waived on an ad hoc basis given appropriate mathematical content of first degree or industrial experience.

Programme specification:

The programme will allow students to develop a broad range of knowledge in order to allow professional practice in any aspect of engineering geology, the largest employment sector of professional geoscientists. This will be achieved through training in relevant field and laboratory techniques for the practice of engineering geology and the development numeracy skills essential to the professional practice of engineering geology.

The successful completion of the degree programme allows candidates with the appropriate first degree qualifications and after gaining the required professional experience, to seek professional accreditation for the award of Chartered Geologist from the Geological Society, or Chartered Engineer (CEng) from the Engineering Council through the Institute of Civil Engineers.

The strengths of the degree programme here in Leeds include:

• Site visits and field courses to demonstrate engineering geology in practice and develop additional field skills appropriate to the subject area;

• Introduction to state-of-the-art analytical and numerical approaches used in rock and soil engineering.

In order to progress to project upon completion of their taught modules in Semester 2, students must have a pass at 50% or above in a minimum of 90 credits and an overall credit weighted average of at least 50%. Students that do not meet these criteria will be suspended from progressing to project until after re-sits have been taken – these are normally taken in August. If after their re-sits the student has passed sufficient credits to allow them to potentially achieve an MSc, they will be allowed to progress to project at the next available opportunity - this is usually in the next academic year.

If a student has not achieved the minimum number of credits to progress to project after their re-sits, or they do not wish to continue to their project, they will be awarded either a Postgraduate Diploma or a Postgraduate Certificate dependent on the award criteria for their programme.

For the award of MSc in Engineering Geology, 180 credits must be accrued by successful completion of all modules. For the award of PG Diploma in Engineering Geology, 90 credits must be accrued by successful completion of modules. For the ward of PGCert, 60 credits must be passed.

Note: Any candidate who has successfully completed any module(s) above whilst registered on another University of Leeds degree scheme is not allowed to retake it/them. Instead, students will accrue the same number of credits by taking any alternative level 5 modules from this list (or any other level 5 module in the university, subject to the agreement of the course director and timetabling feasibility).
