A bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) in a relevant subject such as Engineering, Maths, Economics, Management (and any other Business-related degree), Environmental science (having a mathematical component), Transportation
Graduates from other quantitative disciplines and those with professional experience plus experience in the railway or transport sector will also be considered.
English language requirements for non-native English speakers: IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component, or equivalent qualification.

The programme aspires to be the world leading railway MSc. It will be distinctive for the following reasons:
- It combines exposure of students to multi-disciplinary approaches to analysing the challenges within railways with original student led research dissertation.
- It provides students with knowledge of the entire railway system in terms of the broad spectrum as to how professionals from different disciplines interact to yield a system which meets user and policy-makers expectations.
- The majority of modules are railway specific and will be designed to ensure the MSc is a coherent offering of railway subject matter. This is in comparison to other railway MSc’s where most of the courses are reused from other generic programmes and are not railway industry specific.
- The University of Leeds has a world leading reputation in both railway policy and transport economics. Therefore this MSc gives students the opportunity to gain first class management and economics experience within a railway context.
- The University of Leeds has strategically invested in developing the new Institute for High Speed Rail and the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) has invested in its own multidisciplinary railway expertise. This will ensure students receive high quality, research led education so they are knowledgeable regarding the most recent advancements in the industry. ITS’ pedigree is confirmed by being ranked 4th in the Shanghai Global Rankings for Transportation Science and Technology.
- The UK has a shortage of railway professionals, however has plans for significant railway infrastructure investment. Therefore, the job market will be buoyant for graduates.
- The Transport Integrated Project provides an opportunity for students to develop multi-disciplinary team working skills, so as to gain practical experience with managing a real world project.
- Across the world, railways are coming under increasing pressure particularly as means of intercity transport (prompting the rapid expansion of High Speed Rail) and urban transportation such as in Mega Cities. Holistic, multi-disciplinary solutions need to be developed to meet the challenges of congestion, reliability and user comfort within a finite resource budget. This Masters equips students to be able to develop and evaluate a variety of solutions to these problems including evaluation of a variety of engineering solutions, as well as pricing and other ‘softer’ solutions aimed at changing user behaviour.
