Entry requirements:

A bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) in civil engineering or a related engineering, science or mathematical discipline where relevant subject areas have been studied.

For candidates with at least one year’s relevant experience, bachelor degrees with a 2:2 may be considered.

Applications from professionally qualified and experienced candidates will also be considered.

Programme specification:

The programme aspires to be the world leading railway MSc. It will be distinctive for the following reasons:
• It combines the underlying fundamentals of railway engineering with the management and construction knowledge required to build new railway lines. This will allow students to apply their project management knowledge to the railway industry in an informed and thus productive manner. Other railway MSc’s do not combine these technical and managerial subjects and as such do not prepare students as adequately for the construction of new lines.
• It provides students with knowledge of the entire railway system such as the track, signalling, and system integration. Therefore the students will gain an understanding of how these components interact, providing the opportunity to gain a holistic view of the rail industry.
• The majority of modules are railway specific and will be designed to ensure the MSc is a coherent offering of railway subject matter.
• The University of Leeds has a world leading reputation in both project management and transport economics. Therefore this MSc gives students the opportunity to gain first class management and economics experience within a railway context.
• The University of Leeds has strategically invested in developing the new Institute for High Speed Rail and has hired staff with significant industry and research experience. This will ensure students receive high quality, research led education so they are knowledgeable regarding the most recent advancements in the industry.
• The new Institute for High Speed Rail will act as a hub for railway research. Therefore students will interact with railway companies, international collaborators and will have regular guest lectures.
• The UK has a shortage of railway engineers, however has plans for significant railway infrastructure investment. Therefore, compared to other MSc subjects, the job market will be buoyant for graduates.
• It will allow candidates with the appropriate first degree qualifications and after gaining the required professional experience, to seek professional accreditation.
• It will take advantage of the strengths of the civil engineering degree programmed in Leeds. This will give students a learning experience within an environment of active research and opportunities for national/international collaboration.
