Programme specification:
At the end of the programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- understand the historical development and basic teachings of the major religions and philosophical traditions of East Asia;
- understand some of the existing problems and shortcomings in Western studies of East Asian religions;
- demonstrate knowledge of Western constructions of East Asian religions;
- demonstrate knowledge of the historical development, major doctrines and social practices of Buddhism, Islam, Shinto, Christianity, Confucianism and Daoism in East Asia;
- demonstrate the skills to analyze critically a range of visual and literary materials;
- understand the complex interactions and relationships between East Asian religions, societies, and politics;
- demonstrate a sound knowledge of the cultural and religious aspects of East and Southeast Asian societies;
- to communicate effectively information, arguments and analyses concerning the East Asian religions and cultures;
- demonstrate interpersonal and intellectual skills and cultural awareness necessary for working within plural societies in which religions remain influential in a variety of aspects;
- demonstrate an ability critically to evaluate change and development of the cultural and religious aspect of East and Southeast Asian societies from a variety of perspectives

In Level 1 students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take 90 credits in East Asian Religions and Cultures and 30 credits of Discovery Modules.

In Level 2 students must study 120 credits. Over Levels 2 and 3 students are required to take 140 credits in East Asian Religions and Cultures as outlined, plus a 40-credit Final Year Project module to be taken in Level 3. The remaining credits may be taken as discovery modules or as further credits in East Asian Religions and Cultures.
In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at level 3).

In Level 2 students must study 120 credits. Over Levels 2 and 3 students are required to take 140 credits in East Asian Religions and Cultures as outlined, plus a 40-credit Final Year Project module to be taken in Level 3. The remaining credits may be taken as discovery modules or as further credits in East Asian Religions and Cultures. A maximum of 20 credits of discovery modules may be taken in level 3. Finalists may only take level 1 modules which are listed as discovery skills modules (skd) and only to the value of 20 credits.
