Programme specification:

The programme will provide an environment in which students with a knowledge of German to A-level, AS level or equivalent standard have the opportunity to develop high quality linguistic skills in German (in oral and aural proficiency, in context-sensitive communicative skills, and in written language skills) . It will also inculcate an understanding of the main issues of the past and future development of the Geman-speaking world and introduce students to its culture, history and society, offering courses on a diverse range of topics, including art, cinema, literature, politics, philosophy and the media.

The German Department's expertise is carefully tailored to be both accessible and challenging at every level, giving undergraduates a larger selection of options as they become more familiar with the subject area. Final-year students are offered one of the largest ranges of options in German departments in the country.

The programme uses a wide variety of innovative teaching methods, including the integration of IT into learning, in order to enable students to enjoy and profit from their study, as well as to prepare for the world of work. Students will learn how to exercise and train their critical intelligence, their ability to organise and deploy facts and opinions and their communication skills in both oral and written form.

The ability to study independently and develop interpersonal skills, such as team working, is fostered at every level, and the compulsory extended intercalary period spent in a German-speaking country gives students the opportunity to strengthen and consolidate these skills and manifestly provides a framework in which students can acquire a high level of intercultural competence.

Our graduates go on to pursue a wide range of careers and further study and are well equipped for lifelong learning.
