Programme specification:
The Thai programme is distinctive for being the only such programme outside London, and for the way that it integrates language development with contextual awareness and understanding. It also uniquely offers the opportunity for students to integrate Thai studies with other South East Asian, Pacific Asian and East Asian studies modules.
The programme will initially take students from no knowledge of Thai language to an intermediate standard which will provide an adequate platform for language development during the year abroad. This will include a basic mastery, both oral and written, of full verbal morphology (transitivity, the three foci, internationality, agency, transformation and physical movement of the object, double transitivity and irregularities due to consonant changes at word and phoneme junctures), syntax (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences and the use of word order in place of voice stress) and a vocabulary of several thousand words which will enable the speaker to make daily transactions (order food, ask directions, find accommodation etc.) and discuss in a reasonably fluent manner elements of both Thai and Western society and culture.
Students will also have a sound understanding of the basic features of Thai society and social values and know both how to 'fit in' and what to expect in their daily lives.
Students will return to Leeds in their third year and will follow advanced level language and non-language modules. By the end of their programme of study, students should be able to interpret material in a wider sense, fitting it into the broader social, developmental, cultural and political Thai and South East Asian contexts.
Students are expected to graduate with a sound knowledge of the Thai language, valuable experience of life in Thailand and Mainland South East Asia, and a deep understanding of Thai society.

In Level 2 students must study 120 credits.
In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at level 3).
