Entry requirements:

A-level: AAA - AAB, including Biology and preferably another science or science-related subject (Science subjects: biology, human biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics or Science-related subjects: PE, computing, environmental science, food science, geography, geology, psychology, science in society, statistics, use of mathematics). If Biology is the only science subject then an A grade is required. Critical Thinking and General Studies excluded.

Applicants taking a Science A-level (in England) will be required to achieve a pass in the practical element in addition to the standard A-level grade requirement.
-IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in any component or equivalent English language qualification.

Programme specification:

The subject of genetics is highly topical with the development of rapid and inexpensive whole genome sequencing driving advances being made in the medical sphere. The Genetics programme aims to demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the processes of the transmission and expression of genetic information, and its variation in space (across populations) and in time (through evolution); the techniques, at the whole organism, microscopic, and molecular levels, by which this understanding has been reached and may be extended in the future and the economic and social potential of present genetic knowledge and its future development.

The Level one core curriculum exposes students to the fundamentals of Biology. All students have the opportunity to transfer onto related degree programmes in Biology, Zoology and Ecology and Conservation Biology at the end of the first year. Programme-specific core topics are covered at level 2 preparing for research-led subject specialist modules at level 3. A Leeds Genetics graduate therefore is trained to appreciate how research informs teaching, according to the University and School Mission statements. The extent and diversity of Genetics at Leeds, coupled with the medical input from clinical colleagues at St James' hospital and the LGI offers extensive choice.

Core practical and IT skills are taught at level 1 in specific modules, ensuring that all students are prepared similarly. At level 2, practicals are embedded in lecture modules to aid comprehension. At level 3, the research project includes practical work or data analysis and a range of alternatives to laboratory work are included, eg bioinformatics, computing, field work, re-working statistical data, interaction with schools etc. Supervisors are members of the Genetics programme team or else have appropriate expertise (for example in Clinical Genetics).

Academic tutorials are offered at levels 1 and 2 with the same tutor, who is also the personal tutor, providing continuity and progressive guidance. The tutor is a part of the genetics programme team and actively involved in genetics research. Levels 1 and 2 tutorials include a number of workshops to teach skills eg library use, presentation skills etc. followed by assessed exercises e.g. essays, talks etc. as opportunities to practice these skills in a subject-specific context.

International years and Industrial placements are also offered and individual needs are discussed with the appropriate tutor and accommodated wherever possible.
