Programme specification:

Programme Aims:
At the end of the programme students will have the required midwifery knowledge skills and competence to gain employment as a midwife within any maternity setting within the United Kingdom. They should be sufficiently confident to be a valuable and active member of the multidisciplinary team caring for women who become pregnant. After a period of preceptorship students qualifying from the programme will be able to be critical users of research evidence to inform their practice as a midwife and have the skills to enter a programme of higher level study.

The Programme will:
- Recommend students for registration as a midwife to the NMC so they can gain employment as a midwife.

- Enable students to work in units who hold UNICEF UK BFI status without the need for additional education.

- Provide the skills to engage in life long learning to maintain professional competence.

- Develop reflective insights and a healthy curiosity about midwifery practice and have the potential for engagement in practice developments.

- Broaden their horizons beyond everyday practice through the elective experience, nationally or internationally.

- Act as ambassadors for the University of Leeds.

- Develop communication skills, confidence, ethical awareness, a work ethic, organisational and management skills, professional responsibility and caring skills that are transferable to the work place and beyond practice as a midwife.

Part Time Route:
No direct recruitment will be available to the part time programme but the full time curriculum has been adapted to a five year part-time route for students who through personal circumstances require a part time route to enable them to complete the programme.

The five year option has been developed for students who require a route which does not require commitment and attendance five days per week in either university or clinical practice every week for three years and who would benefit from a reduced academic requirement within semesters. The average commitment per semester will be no more than 275 hours as opposed to a maximum of 590 on the full time route. Thus students with financial difficulties or those with childcare or other caring responsibilities not anticipated at the start of the programme would benefit from a transfer to the part-time route.

The decision to offer a five year part-time route also enables students to step-off the three year route and step-onto the five year plan whilst still meeting the NMC requirements with regard to hours of a 50:50 split between theory and practice and the seven year completion rule for part-time programmes. Re-entry to the programme will be subject to NMC and University regulations.
