Foundation Degree in Healthcare for Assistant Practitioners (Apprenticeship Route)

Entry requirements:

GCSE English grade A*- C or 9 - 4 or equivalent
GCSE Maths grade A*- C or 9 - 4 or equivalent


AND Level 3 health/social care qualification (or equivalent) or successful completion of the Alternative Entry Scheme
Entry requirements relate to the profile of the workforce cohort that Trusts are seeking to develop and to the capability of the LLC in successful delivery of high quality programmes for adult learners with professional experience but limited formal education.

To study at the University of Leeds students are required to have an English language qualification. In the case of a candidate whose first language is not English the preferred qualification for this programme is IELTS with an overall score of at least 7.0

Programme specification:

An Assistant Practitioner (AP) is typically a clinical support worker who competently delivers health and social care to and for people. They have a required level of knowledge and skill beyond that of the traditional healthcare assistant or support worker.
The Foundation Degree (FD) is a full time programme that extends over two years with students graduating in July. The student may exit after one year with a CertHE.
Three core strands run through both years of the Foundation Degree:
-professional working - development of your understanding of the context and nature of work as an assistant practitioner and of your professional skills in this role;
-clinical practice - development of clinical skills and competencies in a range of relevant settings for your role;
-clinical knowledge - understanding of core concepts in human biology that underpin healthcare practice with opportunity for additional specialism in mental health issues.

There is a strong emphasis on students development of their clinical practice coupled with the acquisition of skills for successful study at university. 50% of each year of the programme is clinically based and teaching across modules is designed to help and support you in your learning as reflective practitioners.

The fees for this programme are covered by the employer through the apprenticeship levy.

This course is delivered under the apprenticeship model. The Foundation Degree is awarded by the University of Leeds, after which an end point assessment will be required by your employer to achieve the apprenticeship.
