Programme specification:
This new programme has been specially designed to reflect key contemporary debates in practice and critical thinking around film, photography and media. In this sense it takes a distinctive approach to both the historic and contemporary relationship between these two dominant forms of visual communication and allows students to develop their own practice within a changing and challenging set of intellectual, creative and industrial contexts.
The new convergent digital technology of the DSLR camera seems to be forcing a dénouement in terms of the way in which we create and think about the future of cinema and photography and how we need to think about their evolving relationship. As we move into the seemingly uncharted territory of a so-called 'post-photographic' and 'post-cinematic' age how can we define what is happening and attempt to frame it within cultural and critical discourses? Conversely how can we use critical ideas to frame new convergent models of practice and understand what this means for the creative industries? This degree will allow for these debates to be explored through distinct and clearly defined frameworks of media, communications and technological histories, film and photographic theory and criticism, inter-medal practice and engagement with creative industrial processes. Importantly, the programme emphasises the creative / dialectical relationships / opportunities between the lens-based image (both still and moving) within a broader visual culture in which practice, critical theory and historical discourses exist.
