Programme specification:
Currently, there are a range of masters level programmes in the fields of new, digital and interactive media, but the vast majority of these are taught as practical degrees, with little reflection on new media in its socio-cultural, economic and political contexts. While such teaching is valuable in its own right, it does not equip students with the tools to evaluate the ways in which new media shapes and is shaped by the world around us. This degree, like a small minority of existing new media programmes at masters level, will provide an opportunity to exercise this reflection, alongside the development of practical skills in planning, designing, developing and implementing new media systems and solutions, and so allowing students to further develop and expand their existing new media portfolios. The degree will combine new ICS modules, developed specifically for this programme, existing ICS modules, and optional modules from the School of Design, as appropriate.
The MA New Media is distinctive due to:
1) Location within the ICS and fit to existing MA options and modules: This MA is designed to complement and extend existing offerings whilst maintaining the key balance between practice and theory that distinguishes the ICS from its competitors.
2) Unique combination of theory and practice that is taught through a critical lens: this MA is one of very few to combine theory and practice, and would be the only offering of this kind from a Russell group university.
3) Expertise in the field: the New Media team within the ICS are internationally recognised in their areas. The MA is designed around the core critical issues in new media, but is distinguished by the depth and breadth of knowledge provided by the researchers at Leeds.
4) Use of current research to complement and underpin teaching: This provides the students with an unique experience of research-led teaching, which uses live research and theoretically grounded contemporary empirical work.
