Programme specification:

The Leeds MA in the History of Health, Medicine and Society is a thematically focused programme of study which draws on the expertise of a wide range of staff from the Schools of History and PRHS. The MA will offer rigorous research training and will enable students to develop an understanding of conceptual and methodological approaches to the history of health, medicine and society which will equip them for doctoral study in this area. The programme has three core modules: a module on research methods for historians; ‘Approaches to the history of health and medicine’, which provides a broad introduction to key sources, debates and methodologies; and a 15,000 word dissertation. Students on the programme choose two optional modules from a range which may include: Lifecycles: Birth, death and illness in the Middle Ages; Medieval bodies; The origin of modern medicine; Medicine and warfare in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; Disease and sexuality in Africa; Science in the museum: Interpretations and practices. Students may also choose to study the module ‘Making History: Archive collaborations’, which involves an element of work placement at an archive. The programme has a clear historical core, yet will also expose students to interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity.

Students will have access to exceptional supervisory expertise as they develop their dissertation projects, and can draw on the outstanding resources of the Brotherton Library, encompassing extensive holdings of rare books and manuscripts in Special Collections, and strong print collections of works in English and many foreign languages. Collections of particular importance for the history of health and medicine include the Cookery Collection, the All Souls Science Collection, the Bamji Collection, the Health Sciences Historical Collection, the Kathleen Raven archive and the Hey family papers. Electronic resources include access to EEBO, ECCO, The Making of the Modern World and numerous other databases.

Students will be encouraged to participate in events run by the ‘Health, Medicine and Society’ research group, including seminars, reading group sessions and a postgraduate symposium. They will be able to attend a huge range of research seminars and events at the University of Leeds, including the ‘HPS Work in Progress’ seminar, and events run by the Leeds Centre for Medical Humanities.
