This course examines central questions in Philosophy, with particular reference to issues in the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. It will be suitable for teachers of Philosophy of Religion and Ethics in schools, and students with an interest in fundamental life questions.
The course has been designed to be accessible to students from a variety of Humanities and Social Science backgrounds. It is also flexible, allowing students to follow their interests.
In all 3 programmes (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and MA), students are able to choose between two Philosophy of Religion modules, one examining concepts of God, and the other ideas of spiritual practice. If they wish, MA and Graduate Diploma students may take both these modules.
In all 3 programmes, students take an Introduction to Ethics module. They then choose one or more additional modules in Ethics, on themes such as justice, environmental ethics, business ethics, and the ethics of life and death. Students have the option of specialising in either Philosophy of Religion or Ethics, but are required to take at least 30 credits in each area.
Students of the Graduate Diploma can write a dissertation on a subject of their choosing, in philosophy of religion or ethics or some combination of these subjects. MA students write a dissertation on a subject of their choosing, and have the option of writing an extended dissertation (of 90 credits). The dissertation enables students to examine an area of particular interest to them in depth, with the support of a supervisor.
