Programme specification:
The overall aim of the MA TESOL programme is to develop participants' capacity to make informed and appropriate decisions for professional action in their current or future TESOL context and to contribute to the wider professional community.
The programme is designed for those involved in the teaching of English as a second, foreign or other language in all contexts. It provides professionals in the ever-expanding field of TESOL with the knowledge and skills needed to reflect upon and improve their practice, and further their careers.
The first part of the programme offers a grounding in how languages are learned, in analysis of English language, and in TESOL methodology. Students then choose among specialised modules relating to a range of areas of TESOL, in which relevant pedagogical materials, procedures, and curricula for the provision and assessment of TESOL are analysed and evaluated. Through reading and discussion, both online and face-to-face, students will become aware of current developments in TESOL pedagogy and theory around the world. The third part of the programme - the critical study - offers Masters students an opportunity to develop their own research skills and investigate an aspect of TESOL in depth.
By the end of this programme students should be able to:
- understand and critically evaluate theories of language, learning and teaching;
- plan, carry out and evaluate TESOL professional practices with enhanced awareness and skill across different contexts;
- carry out research into aspects of TESOL which can contribute to professional knowledge;
- take on leadership roles in TESOL curriculum, research or management.
