Programme specification:
The MEng, BEng degree in Civil & Structural Engineering (Industrial) provides candidates with a sound
theoretical, practical, technical and problem solving education with which they can enter the civil and structural
engineering profession or other appropriate professional fields.
The MEng, BEng (Hons) programme will complement candidates' studies in the core subjects of:
- structural design
- geotechnical engineering
- fluid mechanics
- civil engineering materials
- surveying with an appreciation of the environmental sustainability, health and safety impacts of structures on society.
The programme recognises that clients to the profession are also increasingly looking to civil and structural engineers to understand the whole life implications of their designs. The programme will also provide candidates with an understanding of the broad range of services that practising engineers now offer. This will include how construction
projects are procured and managed using different tendering and contractual approaches to ensure they are delivered on time, within budget, at an appropriate level of quality and are fit for purpose.
On completion of the final year of their study, candidates should be capable of adapting their understanding of the
technical engineering principles to a range of problem solving situations within civil and structural engineering. Their
studies will have provided a framework for applying these principles in practice.
Aims
- To help graduates develop the engineering, design, management and personal skills required to become professional engineers and in doing so equip them to undertake research and further learning and to develop careers in other professions.
- To provide the educational requirements (in compliance with UK-SPEC) to permit progression to Chartered
Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineerings, the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institution of Structural Engineers and registration with ECUK as a Chartered Engineer.
Objectives:
On completion of their chosen MEng, BEng programme, graduates will be able to:
- demonstrate and use a high level of problem solving skills as the basis for personal and professional development so that they may provide leadership, breadth of vision and resources to be creative and promote change within the
engineering profession.
- use their knowledge of the principles of organisations and project management within the context of their chosen
engineering profession and industry.
- demonstrate an appreciation of the context in which civil and structural engineering is practised and managed,
particularly an awareness of the management of quality and health & safety systems and environment and sustainability issues.
- select appropriate experimental procedures and be able to evaluate and apply the information gained to the solution of problems.
- apply skills in information technology as applied to engineering as well as a high level of competence in oral and
written communication to other professionals.
- work effectively as a member of a team.
- practise strategies for identifying and satisfying their own learning needs.
- demonstrate a professional attitude towards their responsibilities to society.
BEng
Graduates from the BEng (Hons) Civil & Structural Engineering (Industrial) programme will gain a solid
base of knowledge in the field of civil engineering. The programme offers students an opportunity to study from a wide
range of module choices covering the fundamental principles of civil engineering. Students who graduate with an BEng degree will be eligible for Chartered Status, subject to satisfactorily completing appropriate further learning such as an MSc.
MEng
Graduates from the MEng (Hons) Civil & Structural Engineering (Industrial) programme will develop a
deeper and advanced understanding of the issues surrounding the field, with opportunities to focus on desired areas or maintain a broad coverage of civil eng ineering. Students who graduate with an MEng degree meet the educational
requirements for Chartered Status directly.
All students should consult the School Code of Practice for Assessment to view the progression and classification requirements for their programme.
