Entry requirements:

Candidates should possess a good first degree in Music or in which Music was a major part, including performance elements appropriate to this programme. Alternative qualifications or relevant professional experience may also be considered individually. Candidates will normally be expected to demonstrate suitable practical ability in their chosen instrument/vocal field at interview/audition.

Programme specification:

The MMus Performance degree aims to introduce students to a wide range of musical studies at an advanced level, and to develop presentational skills and interpretation in musical performance.

On successful completion of this programme students should have:
- Explored appropriate repertoire for their field of practical study; and developed interpretive and/or pedagogical awareness
- Demonstrated their ability to perform a substantial recital programme at an advanced level
- Demonstrated their ability as effective independent learners
- Gained an enhanced foundation in research method and musical scholarship, with the intellectual confidence to apply this to their performance, as appropriate

The School of Music's staff have international distinction in a wide range of research areas. This School is renowned for its commitment to progressive learning methods, reflected by its participation and central role in many initiatives in higher education in music. The School is greatly advantaged by the exceptional music and cultural life in the City of Leeds, which includes an International Concert Season, Opera North (with whom the University has a formal partnership), West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Leeds International Film Festival and a vibrant club scene. The University also has a rich music life and the School runs its own concert series throughout the academic year. This features performances by our own orchestras, choirs and ensembles alongside visiting professional ensembles. Teaching is supported by excellent facilities including a concert hall, a music library with listening and video facilities and well-equipped electronic studios.

Candidates will be required to study 30-60 credits from the list below. Candidates should note that if they choose MUSS5330M Instrumental or Vocal Recital they must perform on a different instrument/voice to that offered in MUSS5360M Instrumental or Vocal Recital.

Elective modules:

Candidates may (after consultation with their Programme Manager) take up to 30 credits of Discovery modules. These will normally be either level 3 or M-level; student must pass a minimum of 135 credits at M-level in order to be awarded a Masters qualification.
