- A bachelor degree (equivalent of 180 ECTS) with minimum 2:1 (average grade of at least 80% grade point average (GPA) in engineering, materials science, physical sciences or chemistry.
- Proof of English knowledge: IELTS certificate with a minimum score of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 for each component.

Programme specification:

The joint European master programme TRIBOS is developed because of clear and urgent demand by the European economic and academic sector, completely lacking any similar comprehensive educational programme in the area of tribology, surfaces and interfaces. The programme of total 120 ECTS is divided into four semesters during two years of study. The first two semesters are dedicated to acquire fundamental tribology knowledge, mandatory for all students, to gain a selection of key interdisciplinary basic modules related to friction and wear mechanisms at different scales, as well as contacts and role of surfaces and lubricants. During the first semester, the students will attend four modules in the University of Leeds. From February, students will move to University of Ljubljana. In the second year, half of the students will go to Lulea University of Technology and the other half will go to University of Coimbra.
Similar master program does not exist at the European level and review of current Erasmus mundus programmes shows, there is no program that would even partially focus on mechanical engineering surfaces, lubrication, friction or wear, in spite of great industrial relevance of this field. Namely, surfaces and interfaces design for tribological applications is a highly interdisciplinary area and a comprehensive and complementary knowledge in different areas of chemistry, physics, engineering, and materials science is required. This cannot be achieved in a single university. Because of the interdisciplinary and diversity of the required knowledge, tribology is not even a regular course or module in vast majority of universities. The universities joined in TRIBOS, in contrast, are those few exceptions that already have strong experience in tribology courses and modules, but in own specialized field. TRIBOS will thus go far beyond the existing modules and will integrate various tribology fields and their interdisciplinary nature. For the first time TRIBOS will combine the complete range of complementary areas of friction and wear mechanisms from nano to macro scale: materials and surfaces, lubricants and lubrication, interfaces and tribochemistry, and machine engineering design and modelling. By joining the scientifically-leading and complementary groups that also strongly cooperate with industry and other economic sectors into a coherent master programme is an outstanding opportunity for step-change in providing cutting-edge tribology knowledge for the needs of the most advanced and worldwide renowned industries. The structure of the consortium clearly shows that target is to inter-exchange the science and technology between the academia and the industry to maintain and further progress their leading positions in both sectors.
