Entry requirements:

If your academic programme requires an overall IELTS score of 6.0, you'll need:
- A minimum overall IELTS score of 5.5
- One component below 5.5 allowed (not writing)
- No components below 5.0

If your academic programme requires an overall IELTS score of 6.5, you'll need:
- A minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0
- Two components below 6.0 allowed
- No components below 5.5

If your academic programme requires an overall IELTS score of 7.0, you'll need:
- A minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5
- Two components below 6.5 allowed
- No components below 6.0

The minimum age to study on this course is 18. If you want to take the course to prepare for the International Foundation Year, and will be under 18 when the course starts, exceptions can be made on an individual basis. If you have any questions, email langc@leeds.ac.uk

Programme specification:

This programme includes 10 teaching weeks and is designed to help students develop their language and academic study skills to the standard needed to study on one of the below programmes:
- an undergraduate degree
- the International Foundation Year programme
- modules on the Exchange and Study Abroad programme
- the Leeds International Summer School

This course is also suitable if students need to complete an academic English course as part of their undergraduate degree from their home university.

Students studying in terms 3 and/or 4 will need to successfully complete the pre-sessional module to be able to progress onto either the subsequent pre-sessional module or undergraduate degree programme.

Students will learn practical techniques which they can apply in their degree. They will use learning resources including academic articles, talks and lectures to enhance their development.

Students will focus on improving their academic English skills in the following areas:

English language skills
- using English for everyday communication
- vocabulary development and grammar accuracy
- pronunciation and spelling

Academic reading and writing
- structuring ideas for essays and assignments
- essay writing style
- using academic language in writing
- using academic references in their work
- reading academic resources
- using these skills to enhance their speaking and writing

Academic listening and speaking
- getting the most out of lectures and seminars
- practise listening to talks, lectures and other authentic materials in English
- participating in seminars and discussions
- practising their speaking skills with presentations and seminar discussions

Academic skills projects
- Students will work on assignments which give them the opportunity to practise all the academic and communication skills they have learned
- For example, students might be asked to conduct surveys or specific internet research which are assessed through presentations, class discussions or writing activities

Language in Context
Students will learn English through a subject related to their interests, and work with students studying other courses at the Language Centre. Examples of previous topics include drama, music, business, engineering, history and literature. This module runs in terms 1, 2 and 3.
