Programme specification:

This Joint Honours programme equips students with the analytical skills and theoretical background necessary for an in-depth understanding of how language works and how it is used, with special reference to the English language. Particular emphasis is placed on critical thinking, and the appraisal of how different approaches to the study of language can enrich one another.

This programme aims to:

1. give students an understanding of the nature and structure of language, and its use by individuals and in society
2. give students an understanding of the scope of English language study, including the critical use of the field's key terms and concepts
3. familiarize students with the historical, social and geographical determinants of variation in English
4. introduce students to a range of approaches to the study of language, in order that the students may evaluate these approaches for themselves
5. familiarize students with the concepts of theory, theory testing and argumentation
6. give students experience of working with language data, and introduce common methods of linguistic analysis
7. give students the ability to analyse English text and discourse
8. give students the opportunity to study modules from across the sub-disciplines, and to engage with scholarship at the forefront of research
9. give students the opportunity to plan, carry out and write up an independent research project within a supportive environment
10. give students the opportunity to develop as independent learners and effective communicators

Students will have the opportunity to apply for participation in one of our Erasmus schemes or for spending a period of study at one of the partner institutions with which the University of Leeds has established links (International programme variant). Students will also have the opportunity to undertake a work placement as part of their degree (Industrial programme variant).

Students must study 120 credits. In Level 1, students are required to take 40 credits in English, 60 credits in Linguistics plus 20 credits of Discovery modules.

Students must study 120 credits in Level 2.

In order to be eligible for an honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at level 3). Students must pass at least 100 credits at Level 3 and all core modules to proceed to gain the degree.

Candidates will be required to study up to 20 credits of Discovery modules or a further module in either of the named subjects or the above FOAH module

Students must study 120 credits in Level 3. Joint Honours students must take:

- English: either 40 credits of English language modules or ENGL3022 Dissertation (40 credits)
- Linguistics: either 40 credits of Linguistics modules or LING3200 Dissertation (40 credits)
Plus
- Up to 20 credits of Discovery modules or further modules in either of the named subjects.

Please note that ENGL3022 and LING3200 are mutually exclusive.

If candidates have chosen to take the Linguistics dissertation then they must take a minimum of 40 credits from the following list of English Language modules. If candidates have chosen to take the English Language Dissertation, then they may take up to 40 credits only from this list.

If candidates have chosen to take the English Language dissertation then they must take a minimum of 40 credits from the following list of Linguistics modules. If candidates have chosen to take the Linguistics Dissertation, then they may take up to 40 credits only from this list.

NB: Not all modules will be available every year.

Discovery modules:

Candidates may study up to 20 credits of Discovery modules.
