Programme specification:

The programme will provide an environment that promotes our intention that students graduating from the Leeds French department should have developed the following:
- high quality linguistic skills in French (in oral and aural proficiency, in context-sensitive communicative skills, and in written language skills);
- familiarity with the diverse language varieties and cultures, both 'high' and 'low', of contemporary France;
- an understanding of the main issues of the past and future development of the country, and the important concerns of the present;
- a broad knowledge of the discipline of French Studies;
- specialist knowledge of aspects of French Studies;
- and the ability to undertake critical analysis of aspects of France and the Francophone world, their literature, language, history, society and culture, informed by the appropriate conceptual frameworks.

The distinctiveness of the Leeds French degree programmes compared with other Arts and Humanities programmes is therefore twofold. Firstly, given that the core rationale of the Leeds French programme is to further high-level knowledge of the language, history, society, culture, and literature of France and the French-speaking world, distinctiveness stems from the requirement laid upon students to acquire a high degree of intercultural competence. Secondly, the requirement to spend an extended period in a French-speaking country is manifestly a distinctive structural feature of the programme.

Distinctiveness at Leeds compared with other UK French degree programmes derives from the breadth and diversity of the option courses offered. This in turn reflects the size of the full-time established staff complement, which is among the largest in the UK. These options range from the possibility of study in medieval and Renaissance literature through to the new millennium, cultural studies, area studies, francophone studies, language studies and linguistics.

In addition to breadth, particular stress in Leeds is laid upon interdisciplinarity, which finds expression in synergies, not only between and within option courses, but also between language courses and option courses. These synergies in turn reflect the interrelatedness of teaching and research at Leeds. Examples of this are research in applied linguistics that feeds into the ongoing refinement of the language courses offered; and options at Levels 2 and 3 where teaching is informed by current staff research.

In Level 2 students must study 120 credits.

In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at level 3).

NB: Not all modules will be available every year.

Students may also choose to study the below module, as long as they are not already enrolled onto Linguists into Schools.

Discovery modules:

- Candidates may study up to 40 credits of discovery modules. No more than 20 of these credits may be level one modules.
- Candidates may choose to study FLTU2333 Introduction to Professional French, but no other FLTU-coded modules in French are suitable.

Candidates may choose to study up to 40 credits of discovery modules or take 20 credits and the above FOAH module.

In Level 3 students must study 120 credits. Finalists may only take level 1 modules which are listed as discovery skills modules (skd) and only to the value of 20 credits.
