Programme specification:
The Foundation Degree in Child and Family Studies is a three year part-time programme. It is designed for those who work in a paid or voluntary capacity with children, young people and families and who are keen to develop their professional practice through further study. The professional experience of students and their ongoing work experience are key elements of the Foundation Degree and in each module theoretical learning will be grounded and critically examined in relation to practice.
Through the Foundation Degree, students will develop an understanding of theoretical perspectives and professional practice in relation to core aspects of their role. This includes study of child development, child and family welfare, safeguarding, multi-agency working, social policy development and management. They will also explore ethical, professional, cultural and global perspectives on their work with children, young people and families.
There is a strong emphasis on helping students to develop their academic skills and to become more informed reflective practitioners. Teaching is imaginative and supportive to make sure that students are intellectually stretched and helped through any sticking points in their learning. Group sizes are small enough for individuals to engage actively and be well supported by their peers. Members of the LLC staff team are dedicated to helping students with all aspects of their progress and there will be regular one-to-one meetings with each individual to help learners to plan for and achieve their academic and professional goals and to make the most of the opportunities provided by the University.
Methods of assessment are designed to help students to develop their own thinking and to establish a critical dialogue between theory and practice. This includes a work-based project in which students examine a topic of their own choice in relation to a relevant professional setting. The LLC regards assessment as a key way of enabling students to learn by doing and makes sure that feedback from tutors supports this process.
Students who successfully complete the programme may progress to two further years of part-time study at the University to achieve a BA either in Child and Family Studies or Early Childhood Studies.
