Programme specification:

The MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies puts theory and practice into dialogue.
You will develop critical understandings of the histories of art galleries and museums and explore and challenge key ideas that have shaped museum practice. You will also deploy these historical and theoretical understandings to develop innovative approaches to curation, interpretation and engaging audiences.
A core strand of the MA traces the emergence of art galleries, museums and country houses in western Europe and opens up critical questions about how the past is presented in art galleries and museums. You will build on this work though choosing an optional modules exploring contemporary curatorial strategies, technologies and media, cultural memory, material culture and audiences.

Another core strand is underpinned by action learning and puts contemporary curation in an international context. From the first you will work on an interpretation intervention project, with an archive or gallery collection, in real or virtual ways. This intensive experience of project planning, management, collaboration and team working prepares you for undertaking an optional work placement in your second semester, with a range of placement projects available that engage practically with the museum and gallery sector in Leeds and beyond.

You will also develop advanced research skills which will equip you to develop appropriate questions and methods for your dissertation. Your development as a researcher will be supported by your involvement in the active research culture provided by the Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage.
You will study in the heart of a cultural hub for this diverse and vibrant region. Leeds is home to a national museum, nine council-run museums, galleries and heritage sites and many private and charitable museums and galleries. We are also a short bus or train journey away from everything the rest of Yorkshire has to offer, from The Hepworth Wakefield to the National Media Museum, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Bronte Parsonage Museum.
