Programme specification:

The programme will critically explore established and everyday notions of engagement and participation in the arts and culture. There is an acknowledged crisis of legitimacy in the arts and cultural sector. Arts participation data demonstrates that only a very small proportion of disproportionately white, middle-class, university educated and older people engage in the arts, despite decades of work to attempt to diversify the sector. At the same time, the arts are perceived by policymakers to be an ideal way to address public disengagement from other parts of civic life. As a result, there is much academic discourse about audience engagement and participation; significant policy focus on targets to increase engagement; and practitioner focus on strategies to address perceptions around lack of engagement. This programme aims to contribute critically towards this ongoing debate and to create, through theoretical insight and practice-led research, a more genuinely participatory culture of thinking and practice.
The programme will therefore appeal equally to practitioners who are keen to develop their own skills in practices of engagement and participation and to scholars who are keen to manage and lead a more audience-centred approach to arts management and cultural policy.
Core programme content will include: the definitional ambiguities of audience development and cultural participation; digital engagement and participation in the arts and culture; co-creation and co-production; conceptual design of audience experiences; community arts; participatory funding and decision-making; impact evaluation; the impact of spaces, places and venues on the audience experience.
