Programme specification:
The MPA Masters in Public Administration draws upon the internationally recognised research strengths of schools at the University of Leeds: the School of Sociology and Social Policy, and the Business School. The programme offers an inter-disciplinary degree suitable for talented individuals pursuing or seeking to pursue a career in senior public service or working in organisations closely aligned to the public sector. You will taught by experts from across the schools, developing key skills in policy analysis, economics, and management (accounting and HR) to enhance your understanding of global and local challenges. The course will address the challenges, opportunities, understandings and approaches to managing ageing populations, social inclusion, migration, unemployment, health, inequality, sustainability and resilience, drawing on the insights and experiences of public and third sector leaders from across the globe.
The interdisciplinary character of the programme will equip successful graduates with the key competencies and perspectives required to run a public or third sector organisations or deliver major projects in dynamic global and local economies, including:- the effective delivery of services & resource management; the enabling of positive social change – promoting equality, social cohesion, community engagement & resilience; the balancing of innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability and robust approaches to modelling, planning and evaluation. These competences will allow you to not only have an advanced understanding of social problems of major concern, but to work in organisations that are tackling them in both the local and global contexts.
The programme has a strong vocational element, including a major project in the module MPA Project Labs. This will be anchored in a work placement project undertaken with a partner organisation to enable you to apply the advanced skills and attributes developed across the programme to real life situations. MPA Project Labs will be supported by workshops on global challenges by academic leaders from across campus; research seminars with guest speakers and workshops from a range of professionals and officials with different roles in the public and third sector; workshops on research and impact; and problem focused group work. You will be exposed to a wide variety of the challenges issues and problems that individuals engaged in public administration face and supported to develop a project tailored to your own interests and career aspirations MPA Project Labs will ensure close working of the cohort as a group and individual specialisation; the development of an understanding of social challenges at the global and the local level, and the different approaches to tackling them, whilst fostering in-depth applied professional experience through a targeted work placement. As such graduates will be equipped with a depth and breadth of expertise and specialist skills valued by employers and commissioning bodies working in the public sector.
