Programme specification:
At the end of the programme students should: have a broad knowledge of the politics, economies and societies of the contemporary Asia-Pacific region. Students will normally have taken Asia-Pacific related modules at level 1 which provide them with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the history, geography and culture of both Northeast and Southeast Asia.
The approach of the level 1 modules is comparative and thematic and provides a useful foundation for upper level modules. Students are also able to choose from a wide selection of country-specific modules offered by the Department of East Asian Studies, ranging from Japan and China to Mongolia, in addition to some Southeast Asia related modules.
Modules at level 2 and 3 enable students to deepen their knowledge of particular aspects of the region, again largely from a comparative perspective. The economic development and international politics of the region are key elements of the programme at this level, but other issues such as nationalism, democratisation, security, regionalism and globalisation are also covered. On completion of the degree students should be capable of drawing on a wide range of sources of information to analyse and construct arguments about the region and its component states. Students also have the opportunity to study a language, with the permission of the Head of Department.
The programme will help student develop an awareness of the increasing importance of the Asia-Pacific region in global affairs, and the expanding employment opportunities in the region. We would expect some of our graduates to take up jobs in the region, while others might continue their studies at MA level.
