Programme specification:

The MA Social and Political Thought is a distinctive programme offering an exciting, interdisciplinary focus for the study of key social and political problems. Delivered in a modern, flexible and student-centred manner, the programme draws upon expertise from both the School of Sociology and Social Policy and the School of Politics and International Studies to create a research-based environment that integrates an advanced theoretical agenda with a strong practical orientation. In addition, the programme has the considerable advantage of benefitting from the School's close relationships to the Bauman Institute, founded in 2010. The Institute is a research and teaching centre dedicated to addressing key social problems that affect rapidly changing societies across the globe. It was established in honour of Leeds's Emeritus Professor, Zygmunt Bauman, whose work on international social change and the global impact of major social issues such as consumption, security and insecurity and ethics is internationally renowned.

The MA explores how theoretical frameworks can be applied within contemporary social research. Students are encouraged to consider the positioning and relevance of classical and contemporary theory, including feminist, postcolonial and psychoanalytical perspectives, to an understanding of contemporary economic, social, political and cultural phenomena. Students will consider how the works of key authors from Marx, Weber ard Durkheim through to Foucault, Bauman, Butler and Lazzarato help us to understand the rapid social change occurring around the world. Students will study the sociology of nations, nation-states, capital and markets and inequality in global and comparative perspective.

Delivered in a modern, flexible and student-centred manner, the MA Social and Political Thought allows students input into the construction of their programme of study through their module choices. In addition, students can engage with a scholarly community of research active academics to enhance the existing multidisciplinary strengths of the programme offering.
