Entry requirements:

A bachelor degree with a minimum of 2:1 (hons) or equivalent in a in a related engineering or science discipline. Applicants with a high 2.2 may be considered on an individual basis where they can demonstrate competence in specific modules and/or with relevant professional industrial experience.

All applicants will need to have GCSE English Language at grade C or above, or an appropriate English language qualification eg IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component.

Programme specification:

This Masters degree programme in Chemical Process Engineering meets an important need as a conversion course for graduates in a related science or engineering discipline. This will build on your existing scientific or engineering knowledge and skills to convert them into a specialisation in chemical engineering through an appropriate combination of fundamental, core and advanced chemical and process engineering modules, design project and research project. It will provide you with up-to-date competencies in chemical engineering and process technology, which will pave the way for an exciting and challenging career in the chemical and allied industries.

Upon graduating from this course, you will have the skills to design, operate and manage processes and associated manufacturing plants. As a graduate from the programme you will also have gained key skills in innovation leadership, technology transfer and research and development that you will draw on in your future career.

You will study a series of compulsory modules covering fundamental and core chemical engineering principles and current process technologies including mass and energy balances, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, separation processes, reaction engineering, measurement and control, plant equipment operations, as well as advanced topics such as batch process engineering. Furthermore you will undertake a major process and plant design project and a research and innovation project.

The design project will provide you with the skills and practical experience necessary to contribute to major industrial process and plant design projects. You will be responsible for the planning and delivery of the project with appropriate support from academic and industry consultants. Key aspects will include the identification and analyses of key issues in process science and technology, health and safety, and environmental and economic sustainability that will impact on the project’s success, and the delivery of the final recommendations.

All students studying this Masters programme will undertake a research and innovation project that runs over the third term. You will focus on a topic of your choice that fits within one of the School’s research areas and produce an independent study, reflecting the knowledge and skills you have acquired. This will enable you to gain experience of planning, executing and reporting research work of the type you will potentially undertake in an industrial or academic environment.
