Programme specification:

The programme will offer high quality learning and teaching, in a flexible way, and at an advanced level. Aimed at people with a professional interest in the research of health and health-care - often undertaken within National Health Service settings - the teaching exploits the clinical research expertise in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Psychology and Health. It is distinctive for a number of reasons:

The Programme will provide students with a range of opportunities to develop research skills. The Certificate modules offer an introduction to research. The general principles that are covered include: the collection and handling of data, statistical testing, and writing about and disseminating research. Specific topics include study of case-control studies, cohort studies, clinical trials, systematic reviews, and economic analyses of health interventions. Much of the learning is undertaken in problem-based activities, practical classes, and seminars that emphasis student involvement.

Diploma modules offer greater depth of study in particular aspects of research - for example, in qualitative research, in systematic reviews, in health economics, and in the statistics of mathematical models. The Masters dissertation provides the opportunity to undertake a small-scale research project under the supervision of experienced researchers.

The programme is part-time and flexible, offering most of its modules in short courses of 2 to 4 days duration - usually with a gap of several weeks between modules. Typically, the Certificate can be gained after 6 months of study and the Diploma after a further year.
