Programme specification:

The programme will provide the opportunity to develop a high standard of Italian language in listening, speaking, reading and writing, taught ab initio. It also offers the student expertise in Italian culture in a broad sense, including not only a core of language and of literary texts (medieval, Renaissance, nineteenth-century and modern) but also a choice of topics such as Italian history and society, art, cinema, politics and the mass media.

This expertise is carefully tailored to be both accessible and challenging at every level, giving undergraduates a larger selection of options as they become familiar with the subject area. Final-year students are offered one of the largest ranges of options in Italian departments in the country. The programme uses a wide variety of innovative teaching methods, including the integration of IT into learning, in order to enable students to enjoy and profit from their study, as well as prepare for the world of work.

Students will learn how to exercise and train their critical intelligence, their ability to organize and deploy facts and opinions and their communication skills in both oral and written form. The ability to study independently and develop interpersonal skills, such as team working, is fostered at every level.

In addition, students gain the opportunity to strengthen and consolidate these skills and to attain a high degree of intercultural competence during the year spent in Italy, often on a Socrates placement. Our graduates go on to pursue a wide range of careers or further study, well equipped for lifelong learning.
