Programme specification:

Arabic is one of the world’s major languages and this degree allows students to become proficient while building their understanding of the cultural, religious, political and historical contexts that have shaped the Middle East, North Africa and wider Muslim world.

Students benefit from a firm grounding in spoken and written Arabic – strengthened further by spending a year in an Arabic-speaking country. This multidisciplinary programme approaches the field of study via theology, history, philosophy, sociology and political science. The complex and evolving nature of the field demands dynamic tools of analysis, and so apart from the conventional tools applied in the discipline, we also engage decolonial approaches and Critical Muslim Studies, the latter of which has been pioneered at the University of Leeds.

In addition to Arabic, students also have the option to study Persian, and they can access a wide range of co-curricular activities offered by the School's Iqbal Centre for Critical Muslim Studies, such as Qur’anic Arabic and the Islam & Gender reading group.
