Programme specification:

The Islamic, Middle Eastern & North African Studies degree offers teaching of the highest standard, in a research-intensive environment where scholars and students come together to explore the rich and variegated landscape of Islam, the Islamicate and Muslim societies, while developing an understanding of the history, politics, society and culture of the Middle East and North Africa.

From the early history of the Arabs, North Africans and Islam to the complex international relations of today, students will build their knowledge through a range of conceptual and theoretical approaches such as postcolonialism, decoloniality and Critical Muslim Studies.

Core modules provide the knowledge base for the key issues and themes in the discipline, and students choose from a range of optional modules depending on their interests. They may choose from a variety of topics, from Arab culture, politics and performance to Hanafi legal thought, Islamic sexual ethics and emancipatory interpretations of the Qur’an by women. A range of language modules are also offered, including Arabic and Persian.

Students will able to access a wide range of co-curricular activities offered by the School's Iqbal Centre for Critical Muslim Studies
