Programme specification:

The programme will:

- Provide for medical students a cosmopolitan learning environment where they are able to benefit and learn from the collective experience of postgraduate students drawn from a variety of professional and cultural backgrounds.

- Offer opportunities to develop the ability to think analytically; a capacity for independent learning; an awareness of the importance of and opportunities for continuing medical career development.

- Build on the subject knowledge and skills acquired by medical students who have completed a minimum of two (preferably three) years undergraduate training, providing an additional qualification for those medical students selected for the programme.

- Provide an opportunity to explore issues of international public health, health care delivery, and health policy with a focus on public health care delivery and to a lesser extent health care delivery by Non Governmental Organisations, considering the relationship between these and the private sector.

- Present opportunities and encouragement to exercise acquired skills, particularly those relating to research methods, in two projects.

- The teaching and learning methods used include problem-orientated, self directed learning focused largely on the project work; small group sessions, some of which involve the critical discussion of published articles; and traditional lecture sessions.

- The modules on the course have been developed to focus on health, health care services and health care policy in low-, middle- and high-income countries with resource poor settings internationally.

- Two assessed research projects are included in the course. Each student, with guidance from their tutor, decides on the areas covered by these projects. The first project (Project A) is centred around a literature review and a critical appraisal of what can, and cannot, be deduced from that literature. The second (Project B) is based on fieldwork and focuses on the more practical, applied aspects of (usually) the same general topic.

The choice of countries that you can go to for your project is dependent on travel advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice, even if this may be your country of origin.
