Programme specification:

Communication in this age of globalisation is increasingly multilingual and multimodal. Websites and DVDs are becoming a favoured means for public service bodies, entertainment providers, educational institutions and corporate organisations to reach their stakeholders internationally.

The rising need for translation generally is marked by a particular surge in demand for skills in translating for the audio and visual media, which we can refer to as Audiovisual Translation. Along with texts in the source language, in film and media productions translations are also often used as the starting point for activities such as subtitling, voiceover, dubbing.

The MA in Audiovisual Translation Studies aims to produce graduates capable of operating professionally and reflectively in this rapidly developing translation environment.

The programme will provide them with:
- the theoretical underpinnings and practical advanced translation skills to compete for posts as specialised translators, subtitlers and editors, and for jobs where creating or processing information in one or more languages plays a significant part;
- an understanding of the semiotics of multimodal 'texts' as hybrid texts and practical implications for translators;
- an awareness of the specific requirements and hands-on experience of subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing, as well as interlingual subtitling;
- hands-on experience of the tools of the trade - workstations for producing and editing subtitles, and subtitling software for digital products;
- hands-on experience in translating and managing translation workflows using computer-assisted translation technologies
- exposure to translation project management principles and opportunity to experience simulated translation projects;
- experience of working on translation and subtitling projects in collaboration with other practitioners and/or as project managers;
- training to edit texts written in English as a second language in a world where the ability to translate from and into and write directly in English is becoming increasingly important;
- the skill to extract and communicate as succinctly as possible the essence of long written or aural texts, a skill which is becoming crucial in handling the enormous inflow of information from electronic and conventional sources;
- preparation to embark on doctoral research in this area of Translation Studies.
