Programme specification:

Gender Studies has never been more needed than it is today and we are reminded daily of the importance of gender in our everyday lives. A single discipline is unable to answer these challenges in isolation, and in response, the MA Gender Studies places interdisciplinarity at its heart, drawing on expertise in Gender Studies research and teaching from across the University. In doing so, it not only draws together University-wide expertise, but also makes interdisciplinarity and its challenges and possibilities an object of critical inquiry in its own right.

The programme gives students a thorough intellectual grounding in feminist scholarship, including both the foundational and canonical texts to which contemporary feminist scholarship owes its legacy, alongside current debates and developments across a range of fields. The programme begins from a commitment to privileging transnational, indigenous and marginalised feminist knowledges, disrupting the primacy of dominant Western knowledges that have come to define feminist scholarship in many quarters. Alongside this theoretical grounding, the programme provides a rigorous training in feminist research methodologies, preparing students to conduct independent research and establish their own feminist activism and scholarship. The teaching is designed to encourage the development of these skills, avoiding lecture-based content delivery in favour of collaborative reading, discussion and task-based workshops. This is blended with the strategic use of online materials and discussion platforms, alongside mixed forms of assessment such as presentations, podcasts, book reviews and essays. Students can also choose optional modules both within and outside of the School of Sociology and Social Policy, enabling them to put together a programme that allows them to pursue their own research and study interests.

Students will also be part of the wider Gender Studies community, under the leadership of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (CIGS), including regular visiting speakers, reading groups, work-in-progress seminars, writing retreats and other activities. The programme, and the wider CIGS community, offer an inclusive and accessible environment within which to study, including welcoming those who have followed a non-traditional path into higher education as well as international students.
