Programme specification:
It is axiomatic that expression through original writing and the telling of stories is an essential and enduring element of what makes us human. This programme takes the basic social need for written communication and seeks to set it in a forward-looking professional context. Without wishing to diminish traditional forms such as the novel or poetry, the degree recognises the extent to which technology and social change has impacted on contemporary writing through the growth of the performing arts, theatre, broadcasting, the cinema and the internet. It is crucial to produce a new generation of writers capable of expressing themselves in a variety of media, while harnessing and retaining their own distinctiveness and originality. This course is designed to develop writing abilities alongside an appreciation of the new social and cultural environment in which writing is practised.
