• develop critical analysis and advanced knowledge of the application of geological and geomorphological processes to civil engineering design;
• gain an in-depth knowledge of geotechnical engineering;
• develop the skills required to use modern analytical and numerical approaches to solve geotechnical problems such as design of foundations, slopes, retaining structures, and underground space;
• develop essential teamwork and professional skills to allow successful project completion in a professional engineering framework;
• develop a ground model.
The successful completion of the degree programme allows candidates with the appropriate first degree qualifications and after gaining the required professional experience, to seek professional accreditation for the award of Chartered Engineer (CEng) from the Engineering Council through the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The strengths of the degree programme here in Leeds include:
• A learning experience within an environment of active research;
• Good collaboration with industry, locally, nationally and internationally;
• Extensive communication, employment-related and team skills development;
• Introduction to state-of-the-art analytical and numerical approaches used in geotechnical engineering
• A practical focus on geotechnical design as a means of managing geotechnical risk
• A practical focus on the management of construction of geotechnical structures.
For the award of MSc in Geotechnical Engineering, 165 credits must be accrued by successful completion of all modules including the project module.
For the award of PG Diploma in Geotechnical Engineering, 90 credits must be accrued by successful completion of modules.
