- to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of techniques and rationale of classroom-based practitioner research and advanced scholarship;
- to demonstrate the capacity to describe, analyse and evaluate critically aspects of their own practice and that of other education professionals;
- to demonstrate a fluent ability to recognise distinctive features of a particular educational context and how these might impact upon teaching and learning;
- to develop proactively ideas for classroom-based research through formulation of hypotheses, development, implementation and execution of plans, analysis and evaluation;

Development of key noticing and observation skills. Critical engagement in professional debate about dealing with pupil behaviour and special needs in the classroom. Ability to complete a research project with guidance.

Promoting and assessing learning in the classroom:
Independent critical engagement with research and writings on issues relating to teaching, learning and assessment. Application of related conceptual tools to analysing own classroom activities.

Critical study:
The bringing together of research skills and conceptual tools to identify and carry out a significant research project related to own professional concerns. Ability to effectively communicate the findings both in writing and in oral presentation.

Assessment

Noticing and observing for professional practice and learning
Prepare a report, with guidance, based on systematic observation of the classroom and reflectively drawing on a full range of conceptual tools relating to issues such as special needs and pupil behaviour. Critically evaluate findings and consider implications for own professional development.

Promoting and assessing learning in the classroom
Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a full range of key aspects of teaching, learning and assessment, along with appropriate research methodology, to prepare a report on activity in own classroom. Critically evaluate findings and consider implications for own professional development.

Critical study
Conduct an in-depth enquiry into one aspect of teaching, learning and assessment and associated themes, demonstrating breadth and depth of specialist knowledge, appropriate approaches to data collection, critical analysis and evaluation of findings. Critically consider implications for own professional development.

Learning context

For Masters (Taught) students the learning context will include the analysis of, and decision making in, complex and unpredictable situations. The structure of the programme will provide breadth and/or depth of study and opportunities for drawing upon appropriate resources and techniques. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop:
- interests and informed opinions;
- their involvement in the design and management of their learning activities;
- the ability to communicate their conclusions clearly and effectively.
Students will be expected to progress to fully autonomous study and work.
