Learning outcomes

On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate the ability to acquire and make flexible use of basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are typical encountered within the food processing and related industries;
- proficiently use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities, including
- being able to communicate the results of their work;
- presenting a structured and coherent argument through written reports and oral presentations;
- access and evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems encountered within the food processing industries;
- work autonomously within a structured environment;
- conform to professional boundaries and norms where appropriate.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- a range of qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment in the food processing and related industries;
- skills necessary for the communication of information;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and decision making related to the food industry.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of food process engineering through coursework, projects and formal examinations;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- demonstrating a broad range of knowledge within the food industries.

Learning context

The learning context for this year/award will:
- be simple if unpredictable and complex if predictable. Tasks will be designed to provide breadth of study and opportunities for demonstrating proficiency in the application of concepts and techniques. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop interests and informed opinions and to undertake group study through supervised project work.
