BSc Aviation Technology and Management (Industrial)

Year 4

(Award available for year: Bachelor of Science)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge encompassing the design and operation of aircraft and the broader civil aviation industry and professional competencies expected of a future leader in the civil aviation industry some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the aviation discipline, for example evolving understanding of the airliner cabin environment and the controversies associated with this;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within the discipline through aviation case studies and projects, such as a team project related to the engineering, human factors and/or operation aspects of civil aviation, the development of simulated accident investigations and analysis of the process leading to the selection of materials/systems and their suppliers for new aircraft designs;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument, through open ended discussions of critical issues in aviation (in particular through a series of open ended discussion topics on current issues in aviation safety, health and security), analysis of potential future directions in the aviation industry, including aircraft, the air traffic system, environmental impact etc., group projects etc;
- describe and comment critically on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship in the aviation area and recognising the interdisciplinary nature of the aviation discipline, especially as part of an extended project;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the discipline and the difficulty this poses in predicting the future evolution of the civil aviation industry and the impact that this uncertainty has on the roll-out of both future aircraft and a replacement for the current air traffic system;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources in a wide range of assignments related to the civil aviation industry and appreciate the difference between scholarly sources of information and aviation industry sources that are not subject to critical review;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended team project on aircraft and/or the civil aviation industry;
- conform to the professional boundaries and norms of civil aviation, building a bridge to the specific ethical and professional requirements of different roles within the civil aviation industry (e.g. pilots/other airline professionals, regulators, roles within the aircraft industry etc).

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within the discipline;
- work that is typically both evaluative and creative.

Learning context

The learning context for this year/award will include the use of complex and unpredictable situations. The study will be structured within a framework that provides both breadth and depth and opportunities for demonstrating proficiency in the application of concepts and techniques.

Opportunities will be provided for students to develop interests and informed opinions and to undertake some autonomous study.
