MA Audiovisual Translation Studies

Year 1

(Award available for year: Master of Arts)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have shown evidence of being able to:
- understand the semiotics of multimodal 'texts' as hybrid texts which work in cross-cultural communication, both mono-lingual and inter-lingual;
- extract and communicate as succinctly as possible the essence of long written or aural texts, a skill which is becoming crucial in handling the enormous inflow of information from electronic and conventional sources;
- take into account the specific requirements for mono-lingual tele-texting and subtitling for the hard of hearing;
- demonstrate initial experience of working on translation and subtitling projects in collaboration with other practitioners and/or as project managers.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (Taught) students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- edit texts written in English as a second language in a world where the ability to translate from and into and write directly in English is becoming increasingly important;
- compress and summarise long written or oral text;
- create basic monolingual and interlanguage subtitles;
- create basic subtitles for the hard of hearing;
- work with the tools of the trade - workstations for producing and editing subtitles, and subtitling software for digital products.

Assessment

Assessment will include components of coursework, "take home" current assignments, mid-term oral presentations, on-going individual practice with subtitling software, and a final project involving translation, subtitling and editing. As such, the procedures will be partly standard, and partly innovative.

Learning context

For Masters (Taught) students the learning context will include the analysis of, and decision making in, complex and unpredictable situations. The structure of the programme will provide breadth and/or depth of study and opportunities for drawing upon appropriate resources and techniques.

Opportunities will be provided for students to develop:
- interests and informed opinions;
- their involvement in the design and management of their learning activities;
- their communication of their conclusions.

Students will be expected to progress to fully autonomous study and work.
