MEng, BEng Materials Science and Engineering (International)

Year 5

(Award available for year: Master of Engg & Bach of Engg)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should:

- be able to critically analyse the failure of engineering structures and practically apply their comprehensive knowledge of materials science and engineering to the investigation of a materials-related failure;
- be able to appreciate the role played by materials science and engineering and materials engineers in sustainable development, including being able to carry out an eco audit and environmental impact assessment, and the improvement of process efficiencies;
- be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a range of advanced topics in materials science and engineering;
- be able to appreciate and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of new developments and advances in the field of materials science and engineering and be capable of critically and creatively evaluating current issues, research and scholarship in various aspects of materials science and engineering;
- be capable of taking a proactive and self-reflective role in their working and be able to develop professional relationships with others;
- be capable of undertaking an interdisciplinary design project, providing specific materials engineering input, and further demonstrating the ability to plan, research, execute, evaluate and report the results of an appropriate programme of work in a variety of forms.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- an evaluation of their own achievement or that of others;
- self-direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensure continuing professional development;
- a critical engagement in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- evidence of an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.

Learning context

The learning context for the award of MEng will include the analysis of, and decision-making in, complex and unpredictable situations. The structure of the programme will provide breadth and/or depth of study and opportunities for drawing upon appropriate resources and techniques.

Opportunities will be provided for students to develop:
- interests and informed opinions;
- their involvement in the design and management of learning activities;
- their communication of their conclusions.

Students are expected to progress to fully autonomous work and study.
