- Understand the wide range of exploration, drilling, production and refining techniques used in the petroleum industry;
- Use accurate standards of analysis and enquiry relevant to the petroleum industry;
- Develop and evaluate engineering solutions for a range of basic and complex problems encountered in the petroleum industry;
- Use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information relevant to the industry;
- Be able to take part in projects involved in the design of various petroleum industry facilities and activities, including the design of wells, modelling of reservoir performance and designing processes used in the refining and production of petroleum products;
- Be able to undertake an individual research project on a topic of relevance to the industry;
- Demonstrate appropriate technical and professional competencies relevant to the petroleum industry;
- Use a range of knowledge, abilities and skills to pursue a successful career in the petroleum and related industries.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- an evaluation of their own achievement or that of others;
- self-direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensure continuing professional development;
- a critical engagement in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.

Learning context

The learning context for the award of MEng will include the analysis of, and decision-making in, complex and unpredictable situations. The structure of the programme will provide breadth and/or depth of study and opportunities for drawing upon appropriate resources and techniques.

Opportunities will be provided for students to develop:
- interests and informed opinions;
- their involvement in the design and management of learning activities;
- their communication of their conclusions;
- an expectation to progress to fully autonomous work and study.
