MSc Advanced Computer Science

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have shown evidence of being able:
-to exercise generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities;
-to evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in some aspects of computer science.
-to demonstrate a graduate level understanding of some aspects of the theory and practice of designing and implementing computer systems;
-to demonstrate a subset of the technical and programming skills required to design and implement computer systems;

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (Taught), Postgraduate Diploma & Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
-the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and for employment in a higher capacity in industry or professional practice;
-evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
-self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
-independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
-critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Postgraduate Certificate will be assessed by methods – including written and practical examinations, project work and dissertations, practical reports and oral examinations - in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:
-evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry in the field of computer Science;
-demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and depth of knowledge to specialist areas within computer science

Learning context

For Masters (Taught), Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate students the structure of the programme will provide breadth and depth of study in a number of key areas of computer science and opportunities for drawing upon appropriate resources and techniques. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop:
-interests in and informed opinions upon new technological, practical or theoretical developments in computer science and their applications in the IT industry.
-their involvement in the design and management of their learning activities– specifically through the Masters Project.
-their communication – via written and oral means - of progress, achievement, understanding and analysis of (practical) work completed
