PGCert Medical Engineering Part time

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate familiarity and basic knowledge of the scientific principles and techniques that underpin Medical Engineering
- demonstrate a generic understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of Medical Engineering;
- recognise the complex multidisciplinary nature of the Medical Engineering and the need to engage all stakeholders through the research phase and beyond;
- demonstrate an understanding of techniques and tools necessary for the advancement of Medical Engineering and the role of protocol and standards;
- be able to identify the clinical challenges within a given subject area and develop, execute and disseminate a broad plan in delivering research associated with overcoming this challenge;
- evaluate current clinical issues, research and advanced scholarship in the discipline.

Transferable (key) skills

Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
- critical engagement in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.

Learning context

The structure of the programme will provide breadth and/or depth of study and opportunities for drawing upon appropriate resources and techniques. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop:
- interests and informed opinions;
- their involvement in the design and management of their learning activities;
- their communication of their conclusions.

Students will be expected to progress to fully autonomous study and work.
